A Guide to Healthier and Stronger Nails

A Guide to Healthier and Stronger Nails

They say that our hands mirror our state of health while also reflecting our mental state. They are an important human element that differentiates us from other mammals. At the same time, our well-groomed feet are an important part of our general appearance. However, the care of our hands and feet requires much more than a simple varnish as what matters is not only their elegant "image" but also the health of the nails that must always be fresh and well-groomed.

The precious hydration: Water

Dehydration of the body can lead to brittle, cracked nails.

Try to drink enough water daily, at least 8 glasses a day. Water enhances the hydration of your nails and makes them less brittle.

The importance of nutrition

Nutrition plays an important role in the health of your nails. Incorporate foods rich in vitamins, such as vitamin A (full-fat or low-fat dairy, liver, egg yolk, fish and seafood), vitamin C (citrus, peppers, kiwi, tomato, broccoli), vitamin E (vegetable oils, nuts, almonds, green vegetables), proteins (lean beef, chicken, salmon, eggs, cheese, lentils, nuts), iron (cereals, legumes, seeds, red meat, liver, dried fruits), and biotin,  a water-soluble B complex vitamin (liver, pork, mushrooms, sunflower seeds, almonds, sweet potato);

If you incorporate the above into your daily diet, your nails will grow normally and remain healthy and resilient.

Food Supplements

If you are not sure that you are getting enough of the necessary nutrients from your diet, you can take dietary supplements. Supplements of vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, calcium, zinc and vitamin B7 may help support nail health. Consult your doctor or  your pharmacist for the best choice of supplement that suits your needs.

Cleaning and drying

Use a gentle soap and water to clean your nails. Then wipe them gently with a clean towel.

Also, constant contact with water and household cleaners can weaken nails and dehydrate the sensitive area around them. When doing chores at home or in the bathroom, wear gloves to protect your nails. When painting your nails, always use a base to protect the nails from the chemicals in varnishes. After each dye, remove the old one and let your nails "breathe" for a couple of days.

Also, remember to avoid excessive use of nail products, such as nail polish remover, as they can dehydrate them.

Good manicure and pedicure

Quality manicure and pedicure with products that are safe and approved can help strengthen and protect your nails.

Here are some additional tips for healthy nails:

  1. Avoid biting your nails as in addition to being a bad habit, it can damage them and make them more prone to infections.
  2. Cut your nails regularly into a simple straight shape. Sharp corners can make them more prone to breaks.
  3. If your nails are brittle or cracked, consult a dermatologist who can determine the cause of the problem and develop a treatment plan.
